The PGA of America Finally Cuts the Dead Weight: Don Rea’s Well-Deserved Ouster

By Steven (Admin)·

If you’ve been following the news out of Frisco this week, you probably weren't all that shocked to hear that Don Rea Jr. is officially out as president of the PGA of America. The writing has been on the wall for months, really, ever since that disastrous Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black last September.

The PGA of America Finally Cuts the Dead Weight: Don Rea’s Well-Deserved Ouster

When the organization finally announced a "leadership transition" this week, it wasn't a shock—it was a relief. The board finally realized that their president had become a bigger liability than the actual tournament results.

The Bethpage Debacle

It’s hard to overstate just how ugly the 2025 Ryder Cup turned out to be. The atmosphere at Bethpage Black was pure toxicity. You had fans hurling personal insults at players' families and beer being thrown at Rory McIlroy’s wife, and in the middle of that circus, the PGA of America’s leadership was completely missing in action.

Then came the "youth soccer game" comment. When Rea was asked about the abuse by the media, he brushed it off as no worse than what you’d hear at a local kids' match. That wasn't just tone-deaf; it was an insult to the professional athletes on both sides of the aisle. It told everyone watching that the guy in charge of the event didn't have the stomach to address the ugly reality of what was happening under his watch.

A Tenure of Amateur Hour

If the Ryder Cup failure was the main event, the sideshows were just as embarrassing. We all saw the videos of Rea singing karaoke on Saturday night while the U.S. team was getting demolished on the course. It just screamed a lack of focus.

And for anyone who watched the closing ceremony, the trophy presentation was the ultimate face-palm. Standing on stage, Rea actually told the European team they had "retained" the cup—a total failure to acknowledge they had just beaten the U.S. on their own soil. Between the karaoke, the dismissive comments, and the inability to run a basic trophy presentation, it felt like the organization was being led by someone who had forgotten they were supposed to be a professional.

The Road Ahead

The PGA of America has now moved on, with Vice President Nathan Charnes stepping in to take the wheel until the November elections. They’ve been in these spots before, and they know the drill: when the president becomes the story, the only way to save the organization's reputation is to cut ties.

Rea was elected to represent thousands of golf pros, but by the end of his run, he was only representing a string of headaches and bad press. His ouster isn't just about one weekend in New York; it’s about a total failure to protect the integrity of the game.

It’s about time. Now, maybe the organization can get back to business and stop acting like a circus.

Was the board right to pull the plug, or is this just the latest sign that the PGA of America has lost its way?
